Kasol, located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, is a small village nestled in the Parvati Valley along the banks of the Parvati River, positioned between Bhuntar and Manikaran. Known as the Himalayan hub for backpackers, Kasol serves as a starting point for various treks to Malana, Grahan, and Kheerganga. Referred to as the Mini Israel of India, this destination attracts a significant number of Israeli tourists. Renowned for its trekking routes, Kasol is famous for its trails leading to Kheerganga, Yanker Pass, Sar Pass, and Pin Parbati Pas
How to go Kasol from Delhi?
To get to Kasol, the most convenient option is to board a bus from New Delhi. I recommend reaching New Delhi first and then taking a bus directly to Kasol. The journey from Delhi to Kasol usually takes approximately 14 hours, so it’s advisable to plan your restroom breaks accordingly. Also nowadays, certain buses just travel to Bhuntar, so from Bhuntar you can board shared cabs and buses and reach Kasol.
If you opt for an HRTC bus, the fare would be approximately Rs 700 — 800 per person. Alternatively, there are numerous private Volvo buses available from Delhi as well. These buses typically charge around Rs 1000 — 2000 per person. However, it’s worth noting that the cheaper options often experience delays of 2–3 hours.
Where to stay in Kasol?
We personally chose to stay in Choj Village, conveniently located within a 7 to 8-minute walking distance from Kasol market and just 10 minutes away from Manikaran. This strategic location allows for easy access to both of these places. Unlike Kasol, Choj Village is not as crowded, providing a more peaceful and serene atmosphere. The breathtaking views in this area are so enchanting that you may find yourself not wanting to explore other places and simply stay there. Additionally, you will have the pleasure of witnessing the Parvati River flowing right in front of you. The accommodation options range from bunk beds starting at 400 rupees to complete rooms priced at 2000 rupees. The prices may vary depending on the type of room, so your bargaining skills will come into play.
Where to visit in Kasol?
On the night of May 18, 2024, we embarked on our journey from Delhi at 9:14 PM, boarding the HRTC Bus from Kashmiri Gate. The fare for the bus was 750 rupees, and we were a party of two. However, our journey encountered some obstacles when our bus broke down after crossing the Chandigarh bus station. We had to wait there for approximately 2 hours until a new bus arrived, which unfortunately was quite slow. This bus took us to Mandi, where we had to switch buses once again. Eventually, we reached Bhuntar. Due to exhaustion and impatience, we decided to hire a shared cab from Bhuntar instead of waiting for public transportation. The cab fare for 5 to 6 people ranged from 1200 to 1500 rupees, so we opted to share the cab with others. It took us approximately 2 hours from Bhuntar to reach Kasol, as there was a minister visiting the area for election purposes. Finally, we arrived at our destination around 11 o’clock.
Rooms- We did not make a prior reservation for our room; instead, we searched for a guest house online and inquired about the price. This gave us an idea, and upon reaching Choj village, we approached two or three guest houses and eventually stayed in one of them.
Price –
- Bunk bed- 400- 500 (around)
- Tent 400-500 (not possible to stay in afternoon, due to direct sunlight)
- Rooms- 800 to 2000
Upon arrival at our destination, we rested briefly to finish our night’s sleep. We awoke at 3 o’clock and ventured out to explore the area where we were lodged. Sitting by the Parvati River, we absorbed the surroundings and replenished our energy. The soothing sound of the flowing river, particularly as it cascaded over rocks and glistened against the stones, brought us immense joy.
Later in the evening, we ventured into the vibrant Kasol market, which exudes a distinct hippie vibe. We indulged in a variety of delectable cuisines, including German bakery treats and Israeli delicacies. As we made our way back to our room, we unexpectedly stumbled upon a lively music party. Without hesitation, we joined the festivities as uninvited guests and relished every moment. This marked the conclusion of our unforgettable experience in Kasol.
Grahan- Our next destination
On the second day, we embarked on a trek to the picturesque village of Grahan. This small and secluded village is home to around 50 families and is located approximately 9 to 10 kilometers away from Kasol. The path to Grahan is ideal for trekking enthusiasts, offering a mix of easy and moderate terrain. About 80 percent of the route resembles a well-defined road, while the remaining 20 percent is characterized by steep inclines. Some individuals opt to hire a cab to cover half of the distance to Grahan, with the fare amounting to 200 rupees. Alternatively, you can choose to walk the entire way, as the road is well-connected and showcases breathtaking natural beauty. Along the journey, you will encounter numerous bridges, waterfalls, and lush greenery. However, it is important to note that the final 20 percent of the trail is extremely steep, leaving no alternative but to trek it all the way.
Upon arrival in Grahan, one will notice a higher number of foreign tourists compared to Indian tourists, particularly Israelis. The village offers various accommodations, cafes, and other amenities. Typically, visitors spend the night in Grahan and return to Kasol the following day for their onward journey. However, we made an error in judgment. Despite the comfortable room, we underestimated the 9 km trek and planned to return the same day. Unfortunately, heavy rain in the village prevented us from starting our journey back. We considered finding a place to stay, but hesitated due to the reluctance of spending money on two accommodations in a single day. Ultimately, we didn’t want our belongings to have all the excitement.
We began our return journey at 4:30, but the lateness of the hour made it difficult to navigate back to our destination due to the slippery surface. Moreover, on our way down, locals warned us about the presence of wild animals like leopards and bears, causing our fear to double. The faint sounds we heard only added to our apprehension as we contemplated the potential dangers. But after so many obstacles we reached our destination/ room back at 7.
Kheerganga Trek
The most unforgettable part of my journey would undoubtedly be the Kheerganga trek. As we made our way back, I found myself in tears, overwhelmed by the sense of peace and fulfillment that enveloped me during the trek. It was a moment of pure contentment and assurance towards life.
On the third day, we woke up late due to the exhaustion from the previous day’s Grahan trek. We had both ascended and descended on the same day. Around 11 o’clock, we checked out of the hotel and began our journey to Kheerganga. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a bus because there are only two buses from Kasol to Kheerganga, one at around 10 AM and another in the evening at 4 PM. We waited for a long time, hoping to find more people who would be willing to share a cab with us since the charges were high for just the two of us, amounting to 1200 rupees. Eventually, we managed to find some assistance and reached the dam at around 3:30 PM. The trek begins from the dam, and we reached the top at approximately 7:15 PM. However, the journey was not as smooth as it may seem. When we initially started, everyone advised us that it was too late and that, being two girls, it would be safer to have a guide accompany us to the top. At one point, after trekking for over an hour, we even contemplated turning back. Fortunately, we encountered a group of four people, which gave us a glimmer of hope that we were not the only ones who were running late. As we continued to ascend, we encountered many individuals who had started their journey at 10 or 11 AM, taking breaks along the way. In contrast, we had been trekking continuously due to our fear of being late. Surprisingly, we didn’t require a guide as there were food stalls every 10 minutes, and we also encountered numerous people who were either descending or ascending. Finally, at around 7:15 PM, we reached the top.
Upon arrival, we had an incredible time, not the kind you might expect. We reclined beneath the celestial canopy of stars and moon, indulging in a peaceful slumber in the open air. We embarked on a camping adventure, gathering around a bonfire and forging new friendships. We savored delectable cuisine, despite our weariness, before finally succumbing to sleep. The following morning, we relished the scrumptious bature and aloo, which proved to be exceptionally flavorsome. We then proceeded to visit the Shiv Parvati temple and caught a glimpse of the hotspring, although we refrained from bathing due to our tardiness and the scorching temperatures at that altitude.
On the fourth day, we began our descent at noon and arrived at our destination around 5 o’clock. While descending, we took numerous photos, lingered for a while, and savored every moment that we might have overlooked due to time constraints on our way up. Eventually, we decided to visit Maikaran for only 1 to 2 hours, but my friend and I were not feeling well and opted to conclude our journey as our bus to Delhi was waiting for us in Bhuntar. Our return journey commenced at 10:20, and we arrived in Delhi at 7:30.
Camping stay charges Rs 400 to 600 (including breakfast and dinner)

Highlights of Kasol Trip
The highlight of my journey was BABA, a man known to everyone by this name alone. Baba is approximately 60 years old and I consider him a true traveler. He shared with us that he explores various destinations and appreciates the beauty of each place. The last time he visited Kheerganga was during the COVID-19 pandemic. We encountered him while he was transporting vegetables up to the camps. Although he was not our guide, he patiently waited and assisted us throughout the journey. Despite being faster than us, he stayed back to aid two girls, as the rest of the trekkers were in a group.
Journey Ends
The stay was quite affordable: it only cost us 5 to 6k for four days. The locals were extremely friendly and not at all greedy; they assisted us in every possible way. Surprisingly, even the tourists we encountered were very helpful. It is a safe place for girls, with not a single case of mistreatment. This destination is a great blend of Indian and Western cultures. The proximity to nature is remarkable; you can hear the soothing sounds of flowing water from the river, waterfall, and rain. The lush greenery all around is a refreshing change from the concrete jungles of metropolitan cities. The peaceful environment is perfect for relaxation. If you’re looking for a hippie party to let loose, you can easily find one while still enjoying the tranquility of the place.
